Pillowcases Service Project

The mission of PieceMakers Quilt Guild pillowcase service project is to make, collect, and distribute bright, cheerful pillowcases to children in the hospital.

We are proudly partnered with Ryan’s Cases for Smiles. Since 2017, our guild members have cut, sewn, washed, and ironed over 800 pillowcases!

Once finished, the pillowcases are donated to Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Penn Medicine-Lancaster; and UPMC Children’s Hospital in Harrisburg, PA to name a few.

We have a “community service” table during our guild meetings, where guild members will find kits made up and ready to sew. Most pillowcases are made from member’s stashes; however, we welcome donations to use for this project. Once completed, the finished pillowcase is returned and is ready to be distributed to brighten the day of a child in the hospital. We have the following locations to drop off pillowcases if you can’t get to a meeting;

  • In Stiches Quilt Shop, Wormelsdorf

  • TLC Quilting, Middletown

  • Filaments Studio, Hummelstown

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • About patterns for children in hospitals: All of the tutorials online show an added “flange” of a contrasting color between the main part of the pillowcase and the cuff. Nurses have told us that they prefer that the pillowcases NOT have this flange (a place for germs to lodge). So, please leave it off for the service project.

  • When making pillowcases Do not use fabric with glitter or metallic threads. Do not add any embroidery. Do not use fabrics with skull and crossbones design. Not all hospitals will accept flannel cases.
